Private healthcare sector is a dominant, unmonitored and untapped sector and within this host of factors - Private medical colleges & hospitals are more organized having regulations / monitoring atmosphere (Medical Council of India). Andhra Pradesh has 20 Private medical colleges spread across 16 districts, and these Institutions are at various stages of evolution ranging between being 3 to 10 years old with 2000 Medical Students being trained per batch every year. Most of them are located in rural or semi-urban settings and cater to rural, underserved populations offering mostly no-cost services or low-cost/subsidized services. They have a huge potential and opportunity to play a leading role in the HIV epidemic. As a first step towards involving the Private sector, SHARE India (a not for profit organization) determined in 2005 to develop a Consortium of Private Medical Colleges in the State of Andhra Pradesh. Thus Andhra Pradesh AIDS Consortium (APAIDSCON) - ‘A unique consortium of Private Medical Colleges and hospitals for HIV/AIDS related activities’ was born. The partners of APAIDSCON include 16 Private Medical Colleges and a Maternity Hospital. APAIDSCON is a project of SHARE India working towards involving and leveraging private sector towards HIV service delivery including prevention, diagnosis, care, treatment, follow-up and related aspects as well as systems strengthening and Technical Assistance to private sector in clinical care.
