One of the primary goals of APAIDSCON is to serve as a Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDS training and capacity building. In order to accomplish the same, the consortium provides trainings and sensitizations at various levels.
(i) Advanced Hands-on Clinical Training Program
Four days intense hands-on clinical training programs are being organized on a regular basis for doctors from the Departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, TB & Chest and STD. These programs are designed to offer the participants a hands-on experience of HIV clinical care with emphasis on bedside case discussions. Various topics such as Diagnosis and Management of OIs - Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal Systems, Central Nervous System, HIV/TB Co-infection etc. are covered in the form of Didactics and Distance Learning Session using Video Conferencing. Each session is conducted utilizing the Adult learning techniques. Objectives of the training are: Develop skills in taking care of hospitalized HIV/AIDS patients including taking a relevant and thorough history and performing both thorough and directed physical exams Become familiar with the outpatient care of the HIV patients including care and counseling of the newly diagnosed patient Understand the principles of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) To become familiar with the common OIs and their management Review and feel comfortable with risk of Occupational Exposure and proper Post-Exposure Prophylaxis when caring for the HIV infected patient Understand the principles of infectious waste disposal and management
View Poster (ii) Training of Obstetricians/ Gynecologists
This is a unique two days training program for the doctors from the Departments of Obstetric and Gynecology. In this training the participating doctors are given the opportunity to visit the PPTCT, ART Center and labor room. Didactic sessions are conducted on HIV Basics, Lab Diagnosis, PPTCT program, common OI, HIV and pregnancy, Universal Safety Precautions, Hospital Waste Management and PEP and Blood Safety.
The participants are also given the opportunity to interact with the PPTCT Counselor and with HIV Positive people. Objectives of the training are: To upgrade clinical skills and knowledge of the doctors to manage HIV cases and pregnancy & HIV To enhance their clinical competency for providing treatment, care and support to women who are HIV-infected, their infants, and their families To empower safe work practices (Universal precautions and waste management) To build capacities of doctors for prevention of

APAIDSCON has evolved a strategy to sensitize Health Care Professionals of all cadres in the Partnering Institutions of the consortium. For this, each institution has identified doctors, nurses and counselors as Master Trainers. These master trainers conduct sensitization training with the objectives: To identify the myths and misconceptions To demonstrate and practice Universal Safety and Work Precautions To analyze the steps for PEP To analyze the risk assessment protocols To define ART goals and drugs
The various sensitization programs conducted at the partnering institutes are a. Doctors Sensitization
It’s a two day sensitization program for doctors. It is an interactive training where the master trainers sensitize their colleague doctors on various clinical aspects of HIV/AIDS, lab diagnosis, PPTCT etc. These topics are covered in the form of lectures, group activities, interactive sessions and case discussions. The curriculum / sessions in power point presentations are provided to the master trainers in the form of CDs. They are also given reference material which they circulate among the participants. b. Nurses Sensitization
A one and half day’s sensitization program is organized for nurses by the master trainers. The program is designed to provide the participants, the knowledge and information on a wide variety of issues related to HIV/AIDS.
The training methodology utilized is PowerPoint presentations, interactive sessions, and group work. The curriculum / sessions in power point presentations are provided to the master trainers in the form of CDs. They are also given reference material which they circulate among the participants. c. House keeping staff sensitization. To keep the house keeping staff well informed and to prevent stigma and discrimination, a sensitization program for housekeeping staff is undertaken. The master trainers train their colleague house keeping staff within their respective institutes.
Topics relevant to the house keeping staff such as Basics of HIV & Modes of transmission, Stigma and discrimination, Universal safety precautions were covered in the form of PowerPoint presentations. All the sessions are delivered in Telugu. The curriculum / sessions in power point presentations are provided to the master trainers in the form of CDs which are in telugu. They are also given reference material which they circulate among the participants. HIV Elective - Sensitization of Medical Students A HIV elective program for medical students at par with the currently offered program at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of medicine and Midwest AIDS training and educational center (USA).This program has been tailored to the Indian context delivered to 2,334 medical students across the partners.
Dr. John A. Schneider MD, MPH, Section of Infectious Diseases, University of Chicago and his team of master trainers sensitized medical and nursing students of APAIDSCON member institutions. Objectives of this program are: To understand the HIV epidemic in terms of transmission, risk of infection and burden of disease in India To be able to prescribe diagnostic test for HIV and be informed of counseling services To list / describe / identify the clinical progression and clinical staging of HIV To identify the common OIs (TB, Skin, Oral, Some respiratory, GI and CNS manifestations) that can occur in HIV and be informed of the modalities of treatment / management of them To be informed about the USP and PEP To be informed about ARV drugs, mechanism of action and principles of HAART To be informed of the Syndromic management of STI and the link between STI and HIV To be informed of the PPTCT of HIV
Interns – training program – Work ready program In order to enhance the knowledge, skills, positive attitude and work place safety of the interns APAIDSCON is building the capacity of the interns in the Medical Colleges by conducting a two days training for them at their respective institutes
The training methodology being used is didactic interactive sessions, video case presentations, case studies and group exercises. One day is dedicated for the field visits to the near by ICTC and CCC for a hands on experience of the national preprogram. Training of peer counselors APAIDSCON has appointed PLHIV peer counselors at its 15 Partnering Institutes. These peer counselors refer pregnant mothers to the ICTC, counsel the HIV positive mothers, refer them for CD4 testing, follow them up. They also refer non ANC PLHIVs to care and support center, to hospitals for OI treatment, CD4 testing and for ART treatment.
Refresher course cum review meetings are conducted for peer counselors every quarter to assess their performance, enhance their skills and to enable them to overcome roadblocks being faced by them. These training program objectives are: To introduce the National AIDS Control Program To enhance communication and networking skills To acquaint them with PPTCT and outreach program To develop and enhance their counseling skills
PowerPoint presentations/ didactics are conducted along with, Basics of HIV/AIDS/STI, Peer Counseling, Behavior Change Communication, Basic Counseling Skills, and other topics relevant and pertinent to peer counselors. |
